Dr. Peter

Dr. Peter gave us a tour of his eye hospital. He operates on 20-25 patients per day. The most common cause of blindness is cataracs and Dr. Peter can correct that with a simple operation. The hospital is very primative. No nurses or food. Relatives care for the person and bring food for them or there is cooking ovens outside. Dr. Peter said that insurance covers most of the costs but that because they receive patients from all over Rwanda that very little money is recovered by the hospital through the insurance and so the whole system is bankrupt! We hope that Claudine is healthy enough soon to go through this surgery and that she will be able to see. It was very nice that Peter took the time to show us around.
